FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS TO JOIN THE RESCUE SQUAD?
  • An applicant must be at least 18 years of age.​

  • Have a high school diploma or a GED

  • Pass criminal and DMV background checks.

  • Be clean and neat in appearance. ​

  • Be physically and mentally able to perform the duties required as evidenced by a medical examination.​

  • Be able to read, write and speak the English language.

HOW DO I BECOME A RESCUE SQUAD MEMBER?
  • Persons interested in joining a rescue squad in Virginia Beach can apply online at www.vbems.com/join.​

  • Applications for rescue squad membership are submitted to and approved by the City of Virginia Beach Department of Emergency Medical Services (EMS). On your application mark you want to join Davis Corner/Rescue 2.

MUST I LIVE IN VIRGINIA BEACH TO BE A VOLUNTEER WITH DAVIS CORNER RESCUE SQUAD ?

No, members come from all over the Hampton Roads area. We have even had members with job changes return to Virginia Beach to run their duties from South Carolina and Maryland!

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR TO DO A RIDE-ALONG AS AN OBSERVER?
RIDE-ALONG OBSERVERS SHOULD WEAR:
  • A white tucked-in collared shirt with no logos.

  • A plain white undershirt or white or navy turtleneck (optional)

  • A dark pants (navy or black), NO jeans!

  • Close-toed shoes with socks.

  • If the weather requires a jacket or coat, wear one with no obvious logos.

WHAT HAPPENS ONCE MY APPLICATION IS APPROVED BY EMS ADMINISTRATION?

As soon as EMS Administration has approved your application you are a member of Davis Corner Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad, Inc. (or another of the ten rescue squad of your choosing).

CAN I RUN A RIDE ALONG DUTY AS AN OBSERVER?
  • Yes, email our Scheduling Officer at and request to be scheduled for a ride along. An individual from Davis Corner will contact you to arrange a date.

  • Ride along duties run from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. , a typical shift for our volunteers.

HOW OFTEN ARE BASIC TRAINING PROGRAMS OFFERED?

Generally four to six EMT classes are held each calendar year. They are scheduled either Tuesday and Thursday evenings or Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. with several all-day Saturday classes. The course runs 4½ to 5 months and leads to certification as both a National Registry and Virginia Emergency Medical Technician.DUE TO COVID THE SCHEDULE IS A BIT DIFFERENT AT THIS TIME.

CAN I JOIN THE RESCUE SQUAD IF I AM ALREADY CERTIFIED AS AN EMT?

Absolutely! The application process and initial requirements are the same. You will complete several classes on Virginia Beach-specific protocols and equipment then start your orientation training program on the unit with an authorized Field Training Officer (FTO).

HOW DO I GET TRAINING?
  • EMT training is provided by the City of Virginia Beach Department of Emergency Medical Services Training Division at the Fire and EMS Training Center on Virginia Beach Blvd.

  • When you have been approved for membership you are eligible to start the next EMT training program. There are frequent EMT classes each year with a new trial hybrid EMS course now running online!

HOW ARE DUTIES ASSIGNED?

Certified members submit 6 dates they are available for duty the following month. Dates must be submitted by the 10th of the month. Four duties from those dates are selected by the Scheduling Officer. The schedule for the following month is usually available by the 21st.

HOW MUCH TIME MUST I VOLUNTEER?

Once certified as an EMT members are required to run a minimum of four 12-hour duties each month. Duties are 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Some exceptions are made for full-time college students on a case-by-case basis. Members should also plan to attend the monthly business meetings.

CAN I JOIN THE RESCUE SQUAD AND DO SOMETHING INSTEAD OF RUNNING ON THE AMBULANCE?

Yes, you can join Davis Corner as an Administrative Member if there is a position open. As such you will be assigned tasks that support the organization or you may be eligible to serve as an Administrative Officer, on committees, or help with recruitment and retention or fund raising.

DOES THE RESCUE SQUAD HAVE MEETINGS AND MUST I ATTEND THEM?
  • Yes and yes - at this time we have a monthly business meeting. Members should attend. Meetings usually last about an hour.​

     

  • Special business, such as decisions regarding the purchase of a new ambulance or significant changes to the Bylaws, infrequently require a longer than usual business meeting or a special meeting.

     

DOES THE RESCUE SQUAD PROVIDE UNIFORMS?

Yes, uniform items are issued once your application is approved.
